Our phones are made for taking photos, with each new release, the camera's get better and better, which makes creating your own content, more accessible. With some practice and these simple tips, you can take better imagery for your website, social media, or general marketing.
1. Clean Your Lens
This may seem like a no brainer, but it is very often overlooked. Before your start snapping away, a quick clean of your phone's lens will make a huge difference.
2. Use the Phone's Photography Features
Taking a portrait? iPhone has a feature called "Portrait Mode" that will create an image that looks as if it was taken on a DSLR camera. In this mode, you can adjust depth of field, lighting, focus and so much more. To learn more about Portrait Mode and how to use it, click here.
3. Controlling the Lighting with Exposure
Adjusting your image's exposure can help create an image that is easier to edit and just looks better. Tap on the subject to adjust exposure and focus of the image for a better final product. The more clear and well composed the image is, the more it will be "eye catching", no pun intended!
4. Compose a Beautiful Image
This may take some practice and education. Following the Rule of Thirds (learn more here) is a good place to start. Most phones come with a Grid Mode to help with composure. Another great tip I recommend to my clients is to "clean up your background". This simply means scanning your backdrop before taking the photo. The things I recommend looking for are;
Is there anything "sticking out" of the subject's head? If so, adjust their positioning or the angle you are taking the image from.
Is there clutter in the background? This will distract from the final image, I recommend choosing a cleaner backdrop, or adjusting the depth of field with Portrait Mode.
Is there anything in the background we can crop down? Cropping an image is your friend! Remove all distractions, the ceiling fan, wall vent, etc.
Is there a branding opportunity you are missing? If you have a nice office sign or even a wall that matches your logo color, you can use them to brand your image.
And that is my quick guide to taking better images with your phone. The best camera is the one that's with you!
